
Milwaukee is the largest city in the state of Wisconsin. The city's population is 596,974 with a total of 1,500,741 in the consolidated metropolitan area (2000). The city is located in the southeastern portion of the state on the western shore of Lake Michigan.
The Milwaukee area was originally inhabited by the Fox, Mascouten, Potawatomi, and Winnebago Indian tribes. Milwaukee received its name from the Indian word Millioke.
Summerfest (also known as "The Big Gig") is a yearly festival on the Milwaukee lakefront. Started in 1968, the fest runs for 11 days from late June though early July and attracts almost one million people from all over the Midwest.
